Facts About Brighton
Brighton is situated between the South Downs to the north and the English Channel to the south.
During the Georgian era, Brighton grew as a fashionable seaside resort. This was helped by Prince Regent (later King George IV) who first visited Brighton in 1783. He encouraged further growth of the town and spent a lot of his leisure time there, constructing the Royal Pavilion during the early part of his Regency.
The Victorian era brought about the construction of many of the still major attractions, the Metropole Hotel (now Hilton), Grand Hotel, the West Pier, and the Brighton Palace Pier.
The arrival of the railways in 1841 helped tourism to grow and made Brighton a popular destination for London day-trippers.
There are many landmarks and places of interest in Brighton. The Royal Pavillion is a Grade 1 listed building and is a former royal palace built as a home for Prince Regent. Brighton Marine Palace and Pier (otherwise known as the Palace Pier) opened in 1899 and is home to a funfair various restaurants and arcade halls. The West Pier, built in 1866 is one of only 2 Grade 1 listed piers in the UK. The pier has been closed since 1975. For some of the time since, it has been under construction but various setbacks and two fires in 2003 meant restoration plans were abandoned. In 1888 the Brighton Clock Tower was built for Queen Victoria’s jubilee. Volks Electric Railway is the world’s oldest electric railway created in 1883. The Grand Hotel was built in 1864 for the upper classes visiting Brighton and is still one of the most expensive hotels in the city.
